Pixie Orange Farm – Kajiado

Pixie oranges are increasingly popular in Kenya for their sweet taste and easy-to-peel nature. However, citrus production is sensitive to water supply, nutrient balance, and pest control. The Pixie Orange Farm in Kajiado faced the challenge of farming in a semi-arid climate, where water is scarce and disease pressure can wipe out trees.
Plum provided a climate-smart orchard management system, ensuring the farm could grow oranges that meet export and premium local market standards.

Challenges & Plum’s Solutions

Water scarcity: Kajiado’s semi-arid conditions limited reliable water supply.
→ We installed drip irrigation and micro-sprinklers, coupled with on-farm reservoirs, to maximise every drop of water.

Nutrient deficiencies: Citrus crops need precise micronutrient balances (zinc, magnesium, iron).
→ We carried out soil analysis and introduced a custom fertiliser and foliar feeding program to strengthen tree health.

Pest & disease risks: Citrus greening, fungal infections, and insect pests were threats.
→ We developed a monitoring and early-response plan, supplied safe agrovet solutions, and trained staff on biosecurity.

Inconsistent fruit quality: Variability in fruit size, sweetness, and peel texture lowered market value.
→ We introduced orchard best practices: pruning, thinning, and fruit spacing, plus post-harvest training for packing and handling.

Impact & Outcomes

Increased fruit set and uniformity, leading to premium-grade Pixie oranges.

Sweeter, juicier fruit that fetches higher market prices.

Water use efficiency improved by up to 50% compared to traditional irrigation.

Fewer losses due to pest and disease outbreaks.

This project demonstrates how citrus farming in Kenya’s drier regions can be profitable and sustainable with the right systems in place. By combining water-smart technologies and crop-specific expertise, Plum helped the farm unlock new levels of productivity.
