Rama Farms – Kwa Mating’i

Rama Farms, located in the semi-arid area of Kwa Mating’i in Machakos County, is a mixed-use farm focused on horticultural crops. Like many farms in the region, it struggled with water scarcity, erratic rainfall, and poor soil retention that limited productivity. Plum was contracted to provide an integrated irrigation and farm management solution tailored to the farm’s unique terrain and climate.
Our work went beyond installing pipes and pumps — we looked at the farm holistically: soil condition, crop choices, labour routines, and long-term sustainability.

Challenges & Plum’s Solutions

Water insecurity: With limited rainfall and unreliable water sources, crops suffered from irregular watering.
→ We developed a drip irrigation network, designed storage reservoirs, and installed pumps. This gave the farm consistent water supply even during dry spells.

Soil degradation: Years of farming without soil management had reduced fertility and encouraged erosion.
→ We recommended soil contouring, mulching, organic matter application, and trained staff on soil conservation techniques.

High input costs: Fertilizers and labour costs were straining profitability.
→ We carried out soil testing to avoid wastage, advised precise fertilizer application, and introduced efficient labour routines to save time and money.

Limited monitoring & record-keeping: The farm had no reliable way to track irrigation or crop performance.
→ We set up manual and sensor-based monitoring systems, with a simple reporting schedule that farm workers could maintain.

Impact & Outcomes

A more stable and predictable crop yield, with uniform plant growth.

Water savings due to precision drip systems — reducing waste by up to 40%.

Improved soil health and moisture retention.

Lower operational costs by cutting down unnecessary input use.

Farm staff equipped with practical skills for ongoing farm care

Rama Farms now serves as a proof of concept that with the right systems in place, even farms in semi-arid regions can thrive. By combining modern irrigation with training and sustainable practices, we turned challenges into opportunities.
